012411. It’s Monday … okay … well … there’s still an hour left of Monday (okay ... 30 minutes), so I’m getting this in just under the wire. So, once again, it's Monday, what better day to talk about meditation? Plus, it’s been a while … and I’ve been practicing this meditation for a few days now and I feel like I am starting to get a real sense of it.
(this is from the Beartooth Highway in Southern Montana ... an amazingly scenic road that I recommend everyone drive at some point in their lives ... and on it's own, an incredibly meditative experience.)
This is called a “Meditation to Know the Field.” Yogi Bhajan originally taught this mediation in 1973. It’s a meditation to help develop the ability to know and feel the energy flow in any situation … like at work … if you’ve got a co-worker who’s “opposing” you … or at home … if you’re kids are sneaking out with the “wrong crowd.” For me ... I decided to start this because I'm about to start a new workshop. I'll be meeting a fair number of new people. And I'm feeling like it's important for me to be present and be conscious for the sake of the folks who signed up ... and I have the sense that this particular meditation is the one I need right now.
This meditation can help you develop your expanded awareness. It creates a sensitivity … it expands your aura so it more easily picks up on the energy shifts of those around you.
It’s pretty neat.
So while I’m finding it to be a bit of a challenge because it’s 22 minutes (and that can be a long time when there’s a toddler to contend with), I’m also finding it to be a pretty blissed-out experience, and I must admit to feeling pretty sensitive to everyone around me … even strangers … like the dude at the coffee shop where I was earlier today who had clearly married his metaphorical mother.
So here goes:
NOTE: precede this meditation with a vigorous yoga set or vigorous work-out which includes pranayam (focused breath).
Sit in Easy Pose (cross-legged) with a straight spine.
EYES: Eyes are 1/10th open, with the eyes looking downward. Concentrate your mind at your Brow Point … your Third Eye Point.
MUDRA (hand position): Hands are in Gyan Mudra (index finger and thumb are connected at the tips, rest of the fingers are straight, but relaxed … wrists are resting on your knees).
FOCUS: Keep the spine straight and begin releasing all the tension from the spine outward. Let each segment of the spine release and each area of the body relax.
TIME: 22 minutes. In my experience, it takes the first 10-15 minutes to release all the tension, so it’s in the second half of the meditation that I start to enter that “blissed-out” state, and really start to feel things shift in my consciousness.
So there you have it … a meditation for a Monday. As I mentioned, I started this a few days ago and have plans to continue on … Tuesday will be day four of 40. Let me know if you decide to join me in this meditation … I’m always happy to have a “partner in crime” on these adventures …
Q: Have you started anything new lately?
